Youth Advisory Board Meeting, Wednesday, October 5
This is the first official meeting of the High Rocks Youth Advisory Board. YAB members should arrive at the High Rocks Lodge by 4:30 pm and will work to establish priorities and goals for the year. Dinner is provided. YAB members should contact Mica (mica@highrocks.org) with any questions.
Pocahontas County Imagination Library Induction, Saturday, October 8
Come join the Use Your Noodle team at their craft table at McClintic Library in Marlinton at the induction ceremony of Pocahontas County Libraries into the network of Dolly Parton’s Imagination Libraries. Young children can sign up to receive a free book every month. The event is from 10 am until 1pm. High Rocks girls interested in volunteering to help with the UYN kids should contact Tonya attonya@highrocks.org.
TOOT Service Day, Saturday, October 8
Volunteer at Lewisburg’s annual Taste Of Our Town. High Rocks girls and other community members are invited to participate in this community event where we will be conducting and recording interviews through Carnegie Hall. Contact Devin (devin@highrocks.org) for more information.
ACLU Bill of Rights Dinner, Saturday, October 8
High Rocks girls have the opportunity to attend the ACLU Bill of Rights Dinner in Charleston. The keynote speaker is the mother of a bullying victim. A High Rocks van will be leaving TOOT in Lewisburg at 2:30 pm and will return on Sunday; spots are filling up quickly so contact Mica (mica@highrocks.org) if you are interested in attending.
Haverford Fall Break Crew at High Rocks, October 9-15
Led by 2011 interns Aly and Noemi, nine students from Haverford College will be at High Rocks during their fall break to volunteer at the lodge and in the community. Contact Mica (mica@highrocks.org) for more information.
Junior and Senior College Overnight, Friday, October 14- Saturday, October 15
This overnight focuses on all things college and is a great opportunity to have conversations with current Haverford College students while working on essays, financial aid, and test prep. This is for High Rocks girls who are juniors and seniors in high school. The overnight concludes at noon on Saturday, October 15. Contact Amy (amy@highrocks.org) if you would like to attend.
Senior Parent Night, Wednesday, October 19
Pocahontas, Nicholas, and Greenbrier county seniors and their parents are invited to the High Rocks lodge for an information session about college. Bring all your questions about applications, scholarships, tests and finishing senior year strong. It is from 6:30-8 pm and snacks will be provided. Pocahontas and Nicholas county juniors and their parents are invited to the High Rocks lodge for an information session about college. It is from 6:30-8pm and snacks will be provided. WV and NC College Trip, October 28-30
This college trip is for current seniors, juniors, and sophomores. We’ll be traveling through West Virginia and North Carolina and will visit colleges including Concord, UNC Asheville, Warren Wilson, UNC Chapel Hill and UNC Raleigh. Tutoring at the High Rocks Lodge
Tutoring at the lodge continues to meet every Tuesday at the High Rocks. Come enjoy a shared meal with the High Rocks family, get help with homework or spend time in enrichment workshops. There is no tutoring October 4 due to Election Day. There will be a planning session on October 18 for those interested in traveling to Wetzel County to see a place with a lot Marcellus Shale drilling. Parents who can cook or help carpool and anyone interested in being a volunteer tutor please contact Devin at devin@highrocks.org
Use Your Noodle
Use Your Noodle (UYN) is a free after-school program for elementary school students and is a collaboration between High Rocks, AmeriCorps, and the Pocahontas County Free Libraries. UYN has programs in Marlinton and Hillsboro and is beginning the year in partnership with the Opera House Tune Travelers Program for a unit on world music. UYN begins the week of October 10.
Marlinton/McClintic Library: Thursdays 3:30-5 pm.
Hillsboro Library: Wednesdays 4:10-5:40 pm.

Youth Advisory Board Work Sessions
These work sessions are open to all High Rocks girls and aim to strengthen youth voice in High Rocks. The work sessions are facilitated by YAB members. Work sessions occur every Wednesday after the first of each month: October 13, 19 and 26. It will start at 5 pm at the High Rocks lodge and dinner will be provided. Media Workshops at PCHS
We are currently recruiting students interested in afterschool media workshops at Pocahontas County High School. Students will learn skills in radio production, film, and photography, while exploring ways that media can be used to build community and address important issues.
