High Rocks is located in a rural West Virginia region that has roots steeped in agriculture, farming, and family traditions. High Rocks has worked for years to boost food and nutrition-based education in our programming and in local schools– building relationships with local farmers to supply our youth with fresh food, devoting AmeriCorps members to food projects within our organization and with other local organizations, and collaborating and connecting with other food security programs in the area.
In 2016, High Rocks distributed over $4000 worth of tools, $3000 worth of seeds and plants, $500 worth of canning supplies, $2000 worth of fencing and irrigation supplies, $1000 worth of organic fertilizer, pest control products and mulch, and $700 worth of season extension supplies to 30 gardens in Pocahontas County.
Grow Appalachia is dedicated to helping mountain families plant a healthy future for themselves and their communities by:
- Providing them with skills and resources to grow sustainable, nutritious food
- Teaching them how to prepare and preserve food in a healthy way
- Empowering them to share their knowledge in the community
- Creating programs to provide food to elderly and disabled residents in need
- Developing local farmers’ markets to sell surplus food
Through the Grow Appalachia program, High Rocks will support 50 gardens in 2017. In 2016, over 20,000 pounds of produce were grown and harvested in our 30 gardens.
“I’ve always wanted to have a vegetable garden, and the program gave me assistance in planning, preparing, planting, and harvesting a garden. I was able to do much more with the guidance and group support that I received than if I had tried to start a garden on my own.” -Grow Appalachia Participant
We are looking for more families, individuals and community gardens who are excited about gardening and want to be part of this project to increase their production and the quality of their produce. Whether you are a beginner or ready to go to market this year, Grow Appalachia has a lot to offer you.
