High Rocks has begun to offer tutoring at Pocahontas County High School on Wednesday afternoons from 3:30-6:00. Students are able to bring homework, college and scholarship applications, and any questions they have, and are given individual help with their assignments. All students attending tutoring are provided with a snack and drink, and are able to ride the activity bus home after tutoring. Volunteers from the community have also offered their assistance tutoring in their subjects of expertise.
Marlinton Elementary School Tutoring at the Family Resource Network
In conjunction with staff at the Family Resource Network in Marlinton, High Rocks staff and AmeriCorps members have been active in tutoring Marlinton Elementary School students. Tutors meet the students after school and bring them to the Wellness Center for exercise and games, and they then move to the Family Resource Network for a snack and homework help.
Mentoring at Marlinton Middle School
In the past, High Rocks has placed 2-3 AmeriCorps members at Marlinton Middle School during the school year one day a week. The AmeriCorps members taught weekly health workshops, were placed with teachers to assist in core classes, and also served as one-on-one mentors for students.
Robotics at Marlinton Middle School
The middle school’s robotics team is brand new this year, and High Rocks staff and AmeriCorps members have assisted in coaching and mentoring the students on the team. The team attended a scrimmage in Lewisburg this fall, where they won first place in Core Values.
